چکیده

We report the results of our search for power-law electrical signals in the human brain, using subdural electrocorticographic recordings from the surface of the cortex. The power spectral density (PSD) of these signals has the power-law form P (f) ∼ f from 80 to 500 Hz. This scaling index χ = 4.0 ± 0.1 is universal, across subjects, area in the cortex, and local neural activity levels. The shape of the PSD does not change with local cortex activity, only its amplitude increases. We observe a knee in the spectra at f0 ≃ 70 Hz, implying the existence of a characteristic time scale τ = (2πf0) −1 ≃ 2− 4 msec. For f < f0 we find evidence for a power-law with χL ≃ 2.0± 0.4.

Characterization of Scale-Free Properties of Human Electrocorticography in Awake and Slow Wave Sleep States

Like many complex dynamic systems, the brain exhibits scale-free dynamics that follow power-law scaling. Broadband power spectral density (PSD) of brain electrical activity exhibits state-dependent power-law scaling with a log frequency exponent that varies across frequency ranges. Widely divergent naturally occurring neural states, awake and slow wave sleep (SWS), were used to evaluate the nat...

The power law scaling, geometric and kinematic characteristic of faults in the Northern part of the Kerman Coal Province (KCP), Iran

According to numerous studies, there are basic and initial scaling relationship for the geometric and kinematic characteristics of faults. The study area is located in the northern part of the Kerman coal province. The statistical calculations are consisting of:  measure the surface density of faults per unite area and division of the area, determining the direction of the dominant faulting and...

Power-Law Scaling in the Brain Surface Electric Potential

Recent studies have identified broadband phenomena in the electric potentials produced by the brain. We report the finding of power-law scaling in these signals using subdural electrocorticographic recordings from the surface of human cortex. The power spectral density (PSD) of the electric potential has the power-law form P(f ) approximately Af(-chi) from 80 to 500 Hz. This scaling index, chi ...

Avalanche Analysis from Multielectrode Ensemble Recordings in Cat, Monkey, and Human Cerebral Cortex during Wakefulness and Sleep

Self-organized critical states are found in many natural systems, from earthquakes to forest fires, they have also been observed in neural systems, particularly, in neuronal cultures. However, the presence of critical states in the awake brain remains controversial. Here, we compared avalanche analyses performed on different in vivo preparations during wakefulness, slow-wave sleep, and REM slee...

Application of Rheological Modeling in Food Emulsions

Various scaling methods such as relative viscosity, Peclet and Reynolds scaling were used to find the best scaling law. Scaling and modeling of the flow curves of various model emulsions consist of Tragacanth Gum (TG) (0.5, 1 % wt), Oleic acid (5, 10% v/v) and WPI (2, 4 % wt) were investigated and the best models were selected. As these emulsions are non-Newtonian, they do not obey the usual...
